Service Description

In Physical Sciences, students explore the concepts of Chemistry and Physics in engaging and age-appropriate ways. This is a fantastic course geared towards upper middle school students because we build the foundation for high school physics and chemistry. In the fall semester, kids will learn about the structure of an atom, the periodic table and its trends, what determines the reactivity of various substances, different types of reactions (synthesis, decomposition, combustion, neutralization, single displacement, and double displacement), and polarity of covalent bonds. In the spring semester, students will study thermodynamics, Newtonian laws, gas laws, conservation of energy, and the theory of gravity. This course requires some math but is intended to be more theoretical. Challenge problems will be presented to students throughout the course for those looking for a greater mathematical understanding of each unit. Students are assigned three lessons per week: two video assignments with notes and an open note quiz. Tests and midterms are provided. There is no textbook for this class, though we pull from various articles, videos, and PHET labs. To answer your child's burning questions: yes, we will be using hydrochloric acid and lighting things on fire. This class is fun! Students must be mature middle schoolers to register.
